Former WWFC Footballers

I remember him being slow and not particularly tall but being a decent defender and good organiser.

He went on to be Wrexham player of the season after leaving us, but that was long before all the Hollywood palaver.

From what I recall Westwood was OK for us in L2, but then in the heady heights of the third tier, alongside other defenders also ill-equipped for the level as we’ve said (Duberry, Oliver) he often looked well out of his depth.

Was good to see Jordan Willis playing for Northampton last weekend. He always looked good for us but his injury record justified his release. Only 50 games in nearly 3 years there.

A league up, and another year on Westwood’s tiring legs proved to much. He was a strong, committed with good positioning, but his diminishing pace got exposed regularly in League 1. Not dissimilar from Adam Al Abd, who for one reason or another didn’t have to suffer the same fate for long, when we got promoted.

How do I have absolutely no memory of him ever playing for us? And yet I can remember players who played 2 or 3 games here in the 90s.

Indeed Taylor’s recruitment was scuppered by Hayes’ ultimatum, however he didn’t help himself by signing son in law Stuart Green, who looked like he’d never seen a football boot let alone a ball.

As for Waddock’s time, if you go back and watch highlights from that season, it’s remarkable how quick and direct it is. There is some wonderful play in there, and it was a very tight league at the top to get out of. He was a brilliant coach, but in my memory absolutely woeful at making a permanent signing. Some real dross in there, which is why we relied so heavily on last minute frees and loan signings to try and save the L1 seasons. His time at the club was also hampered by Nikki Bull having a breakdown, and then Martin Kuhl lamping one of his own players.

To be fair to Jordan it’s just over 2 years as he didn’t join until mid October 2023.

He’s played 60 games in total.

I thought he was decent too but injuries now and then are still having to be managed.

I have vague memories of us beating a poor Burton side and running an ageing Darren Moore ragged. Stuart Lewis didn’t score many but got a couple that night. Waddock wasn’t the best in the transfer market, or didn’t have the opportunity to be, but he assembled a decent side for L2 level.

I also have very little recollection of Willis’ time with us. Too many former players to process and file away in the old noggin now.

Weren’t we relegated with the side he assembled for L1?

Sorry that was meant to say for L2!

Would agree with that. One of a dreadful set of options for that level of football not helped by having said dreadful options around them.

Two absolute screamers too wasn’t it? LIke absolutely ridiculous hits from a player with maximum heart but very little flair

I remember Bull being superb at saving pens, but conceded more long rangers than any keeper I could remember.

Didn’t Waddock basically just sign his old Aldershot team ?

Yes. Signing players you’re familiar with, that can be ok. Constantly raiding them when they’re in the tier below, never felt great.

We were also Brentford 2nd XI though, it wasn’t just Aldershot players.

(I’m not really referring to Nikki Bull who played vastly more times for Brentford than he did for Aldershot, more the others on this list).

I seem to recall the likes of Woking and Boreham Wood being Wycombe’s 2nd XI also at points in the past.

Of course Stevenage are that team this season (Lubala, Pattenden, Campbell, Nick Freeman. I’m not going to count Saxon Earley since he never actually played for us and obviously Revell doesn’t count as he’s the manager).

Bit embarrassing that we’re narrowly behind our own B team, but of course Dodds can take a chunk of that credit.

Nick Freeman signed for Shrewsbury 13th of this month… .

His transfermarkt picture is not very flattering… . I don’t know if he’s mostly been homeless or on really hard times since he left us,

Stevenage are fading fast. They won’t trouble the top half of League One come May.

Academy defender Christian Swaby has joined Aylesbury United. No mention of a loan but he is still listed in the Academy.
