The World Cup

Amazing that something that can ultimately give us so much joy can for the most part be absolute torture.

Yesterday reminded me of something and I’ve been trying to put my finger on it and it’s just clicked; “that” afternoon at Torquay. Just knowing there was so long to hold out (England last night and Mansfield back then) and knowing that in an instant a goal could be scored and the whole thing would just come crashing down around us.

Enjoyable only in retrospect but still something that we all feel lucky to be invested in (imagine not liking football etc etc)

Anyway, what a night, what a match, what a performance. Let’s do it all again next Saturday

I’m getting tense just watching the match replay. God knows what it was like last night. I suspect most Gasroomers were tucked up in bed after a Cocoa like me.

No, set alarm got up and watched it and went back to bed. You had to see that live.

Fantastic game to watch live…retirement has its benefits!

So glad we did not have another half an hour. The players looked dead on their feet at the whistle.

Good to see EUFA’s statement about the “suspended” red card, now they need to follow that up with some action to either replace FIFA or at minimum get a clear out of the top tier of delegates & staff.

So thought I was doing well and fairly pleased with myself only having had one beer by 10.30pm last night, so opened the bar so to speak…only to hear an hour delay. Bugger. Might as well push on now I thought, and boy am I glad I stayed up. Trying to not scream in delight as Jude’s second went in was tough, nearly as tough when Essando scored the winner at Filbert Street and I was sat with behind the goal in the Leicester end!

Got to bed around 4.30, took the dog out at 7.30 and back to bed, woke up at 12.30 and have just watched the highlights again and all the analysis. Fuck me what a game! Painful and agonising but that was the England we’ve all wanted to show up for years and years now. Can seeing us doing the Weigies and then Argentina in the semis.. Could this be the year? C’mon England!!!

A weegie (admittedly with two "e"s) is a colloquial term for a Glaswegian

…and Norwegians…just hope the Scots aren’t in Miami Saturday too!

We all know that if the USA were playing England, Balogun would be booed every time he touched the ball. I wonder if the Belgians will be so moved. It might be better if the player said he accepted the ban and that he is sure his teammates will secure a win without him. Shame he’s been made into an issue by politicians and weak officials at FIFA. What a shambles.

Trump’s bullying continues.

Prevented one ref from attending and now criticising another as ‘suspect’ for an on-field decision that in theory even FIFA are saying is correct. Good for UEFA for calling it out but football governance looks increasingly shambolic. And how are we expected to win now Jordan Henderson has broken his wrist?

If there’s any justice in the world, trump coming out and admitting he asked for the suspension will be the final nail in Infantinos coffin.

And I thought Sepp Blatter was bad

This is the literal mixing of politics and sports. It’s appropriate fare for discussion.

How does the European governing body replace FIFA?

I was tucked up in bed having Hoar licks

Selfishly I was glad we didn’t have an extra half hour as I was absolutely knackered just watching.

I couldn’t stop thinking for a lot of that it was like watching Wycombe under GA.

I assumed their tongue was firmly in their cheek

Err no - whoops sorry, thought you were responding to my earlier post :grimacing:

Outrageous that Trump has openly questioned the Brazilian referee’s integrity. What an absolute stain he is on the planet. Equally so Infantino for sucking up to him so slavishly.

No one will challenge him - USA will (be given) win the World Cup - Trump will be mesmerised by a gold shiny thing for a few minutes - then it will be tossed in the “trash” and “soccer” for him will be distant memory after the end of July 26 because he will be starting yet another “peace” war !
