So Egypt’s goal was ruled out for an Argentinian having his foot stood on. Salah has his foot stood on in the box - no penalty and Argentina break and score. But we won’t worry about that. ITV are a joke for not discussing it more. But Messi must win. Ah well…

Neither of the challenges on Egyptian players in those instances were fouls so what’s the point in discussing them.

It was a foul on the Argentina player - it just shouldn’t have had VAR intervene.

Switzerland always seem to amble their way into the last 16. But I believe they’d be reaching the WC QFs for only the second time should they win this. No real preference but an Argentina v Colombia match-up does seem more appetising.

If any match needed penalties to make it interesting it has been this Switzerland vs Colombia. Not convinced either side would score if they had a week. Colombia really butchering some great opportunities too.

6 of the 8 quarter finalists are European, along with Argentina & Morocco; sort of confirms the current state of world football.

What has been disappointing is the poor showing by Asian teams in particular, but also those from sub-Saharan Africa; the Arab nations have done well again. This should be an issue for FIFA given the billions of £s they have ploughed into football across Asia/Africa/Oceania, though Infantino won’t see it as such as he has a secure bloc vote from those federations so he is safe at the next election.

Here’s a stat for you. There are 22 players born in the Paris metropolitan area who are on the rosters of teams competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. This accounts for nearly half of all the 56 Paris-born players who initially began the tournament
